When I was young my mother canned and pickled every year, beautiful fruits and vegetables from our gardens. She had learned how to preserve food from her grandmother; I learned from them both.
I now practice small batch preserving. This way I can make the most out of fruits and vegetables as they become available throughout the year. The rest of the time I enjoy recreating the old recipes, especially ones from my childhood.
